We lived in foreclosed housing estates with a porter and we had curfew after 10pm.
We received only a few German lessons, because learning German wasn't intentioned. Twenty percent of our wages were deducted as “compensation to protect and build up the home land."
If women got pregnant they were forced into abortion or sent back to Vietnam.
It wasn't permitted to bring family members along or have them follow later.
For us the fight for the right to stay in Germany began after the fall of the German Wall. A decision was made in 1993, which allowed us to stay under clearly defined conditions.
The biggest problem for us was the hate against us Vietnamese in certain districts. Massive physical attacks on Vietnamese people happened almost on a daily basis..
